The Tennis Shop at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club

Sunny and amazing as it's been for...months ("winter"), sure enough the rain came down on our first tournament of the year.  Here's guest blogger and shop assistant Josh Packard's commentary on the tournament weekend...

February 27th through March 2nd marked the 125th playing of the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championships here at LJBTC. This year’s event featured more than 110 doubles teams hailing from 17 different universities. The participating schools included local favorites, such as: UCSD, USD, SDSU, USC, and UCLA; as well as some others who traveled a few more miles, such as: Villanova, Boston College, St. Johns, and William & Mary. Early in the week it looked like Mother Nature was going to be the big winner as rainstorms occupied our usually sunny skies.

Many players found different ways to occupy themselves during the weather delays. Some looked more studious than others, the pool appeared to be as crowded as an afternoon in July, and some of the East-coast participants reminded us that a rainy day at the beach is still a day at the beach.

Once the action got going the tennis was high-energy, fast-paced, and finely tuned. These collegiate athletes brought big serves, explosive groundstrokes, and sharp volleys.

After a marathon of matches stretching into Sunday evening, one doubles team emerged as the champions. Congratulations to Gustavo Gonzales and Bojan Szumanski of Rice University, defeating Filip Bergevi and Mads Engsted of Cal Berkeley by a score of 7-6(4) in an abbreviated one-set format. And thank you to all of the participants, staff, and volunteers for making this event special despite the challenges posed by the weather.

These collegiate athletes bring with them a sense of passion for the game and an enthusiasm for competing. Hopefully this energy pushes you to take your game to the next level or to get back on the courts if it has been a little while. In the Tennis Shop we offer the latest racket models by Head and Wilson, various grip and accessory options, as well as a brand new shoe line for both men and women. Come shop with us before you hit the courts!
